Advanced Anchoring Techniques for Heavy Machinery

Transporting heavy machinery, such as excavators or bulldozers, represents one of the most complex logistical challenges. Faulty anchoring can lead not only to cargo damage but also to serious accidents on public roads.

In this article, we will analyze the essential techniques for securing high-tonnage loads, focusing on the correct selection and application of lashing straps.

1. Evaluating Anchor Points

The first, and most critical, step is identifying robust points on the machinery. These are specially designed for lashing (e.g., integrated eyes or hooks). Never use weak structural parts or decorative components.

2. Calculating Tension Force

Each strap has a Standard Tension Capacity (LC) and a Equipment Capacity (STF). For a 20-ton machine, it is necessary to calculate the force generated by acceleration, braking, and vibrations. A rule of thumb is to use at least 4 straps with an individual capacity exceeding the distributed weight by 50%.

Precise tightening with the metal ratchet ensures uniform tension.

3. Geometry and Lashing Angle

The angle between the strap and the platform is crucial. An angle that is too wide drastically reduces the effective holding capacity. Straps should be stretched as parallel as possible to the platform, and the locking systems (metal ratchet) must be visually checked for complete engagement.

Implementing these techniques, along with the use of high-strength polyester straps, ensures that the cargo remains stable for the entire duration of the journey, protecting both the investment and traffic participants.

About the Expert Behind Our Solutions

With over 15 years of experience in the transport and construction materials industry, Mihai has become a pioneer in the development and application of professional heavy cargo anchoring systems.

His career began on construction sites, where he saw firsthand the consequences of inadequate securing. This experience led him to specialize in load engineering and to study the behavior of high-strength polyester materials under extreme transit conditions.

At TornadoStrap, Mihai leads the product development team, personally testing every batch of straps and locking devices. He is the author of numerous technical guides on securing heavy equipment on platforms, used as reference material in the industry.

"Transport safety is not just about rules, but about understanding the physics of the load and choosing the exact anchoring point. A quality strap is just the tool; expertise makes the difference."
